First it was on Tuesday when Ryan Spooner spoke to the media saying “I felt like the last coach… he didn’t really trust me. It might’ve been on me, but I just don’t think he liked me as a player.” This wasn’t breaking news for those who have either watched or followed this Bruins team the past few years. It was clear Spooner and Claude butted heads but on Thursday morning we got more news of the narrative that Claude hates young players. Frank Vatrano on 98.5 the sports hub morning show Toucher and Rich said “I didn’t have the best relationship with Claude.” Surprising quote from Frank who has mostly kept to himself and hasn’t opened up about stuff since he’s been in Boston.
I was one of those people who brushed off the whole Claude hates young players narrative but it seems I was wrong, If Frank had problems with Claude there are many more players who also had issues names like Joe Morrow, C.Miller, Seth Griffith and Alexander Khoklachev. All those names have either left the Bruins or struggled to find ice time under Claude. It was clear that Claude would have favored to play old vets who would give you good defensive zone coverage and below average offense over young guys who were prone to making mistakes in the defensive zone but gave you a lot more creativity in the offensive zone. It will be interesting to see if anymore players speak out and I am sure there will be.
