The most promising USA World Championship team in years had a underwhelming start to the tournament when they took on host country Germany.
Germany got on the board 1st with a goal from Tobias Rieder with assists from Patrick Reimer and Dominik Kahun. But the story of this game was the goaltending from Thomas Greiss who held the Americans scoreless until the 9 minute mark in the 3rd period. U.S captain Connor Murphy tied the game up with a shot from the point with assists from Dylan Larkin and Brock Nelson. Unfortunately that tie did not last long when Danny Dekeyser took a tripping penalty where Dennis Seidenberg took a shot from the point that was tipped in by Patrick Hager.
German goalie Thomas Greiss was the star of the game with his 42 saves that led to the big Germany upset.
This game isn’t much of a worry for the U.S because of the long round robin schedule but the U.S will need to get more comfortable with each other if they want to have a successful tournament.
Possible Changes For U.S
- Play Anders Bjork the Junior winger from Notre Dame was a Hobey Baker finalist for a reason and HC Jeff Blashill will need to find a spot in the lineup for him next game. Bjork had 52 points in 39 games for Notre Dame. Jordan Greenway who was the 4th line LW and wasn’t much of a factor had 31 points in 37 games at Boston University.
- Take Danny Dekeyser off a top 4 defensive pairing. Dekeyser was the reason for the Germans 2nd goal with his tripping penalty late in the game. Dekeyser is a fine 5th or 6th defenseman he can’t be a reliable top 4 defenseman. An option could be switching him and Charlie McAvoy who proves over and over he can be a top 2 defenseman at any level and at any stage ( NCAA, World Juniors, AHL, NHL Playoffs)
USA’s next game is Sunday at 10:15 am ET vs Denmark
